History
A Community with History Inspired by Al Potvin
Hilan Village is built on land that has long been part of everyday life in Mississippi Mills. Before becoming a new riverside neighbourhood, this property belonged to a beloved local philanthropist, Al Potvin, whose generosity and community spirit left a lasting imprint on the town.
In the 1980s, Al Potvin purchased this 20+ acre farm for his company, Hilan Play Structures. And instead of keeping the land private, Al and his wife, Barb, opened it to the community, creating space for neighbours to gather, explore, and connect with nature.
Residents still remember the trails winding through the fields, the piles of leaves turned into fresh compost for gardens, and the seasonal celebrations that brought people together year after year.
The name Hilan Village honours Al Potvin and the company that once operated on this land. The sunflower in the logo is a direct nod to the fields Al planted decades ago - a symbol of warmth, renewal, and generosity.
It’s a reminder that this place has always been about more than land. It’s been about people.
